After a Calgary storm, everyone gives you the same non-answer: "it depends." True, but useless. This guide gives you the actual ranges we see on Calgary vehicles, what moves a repair from the low end to the high end, and what lands on you versus your insurer. By the end you will know roughly where your car sits, and how to get your exact range in 3 minutes.

What sets the price

Hail repair is priced from a panel-by-panel damage map, not a flat rate. Four things drive the number:

  • Dent count. The single biggest factor. Thirty dents and three hundred dents are different jobs, even on the same car.
  • Dent size and depth. Estimators size dents like coins: dime, nickel, loonie. Bigger and deeper costs more, and sharp creases cost more than round dimples.
  • Which panels are hit. Hoods and roofs take the worst of a storm. Aluminum panels, braced edges, and tight corners take more time than an open steel door skin.
  • Paint condition. Paintless dent repair only works when the paint is intact. Cracked or chipped paint pushes a panel toward conventional repair, which adds cost.

This is why two cars parked side by side in the same storm can carry very different repair numbers. The car, the angle it faced, even where it sat on the street all change the map.

Typical ranges in Calgary

With those factors in mind, here is where most Calgary hail repairs land:

  • Light damage (a few dozen small dents, one or two panels): roughly $1,500 to $3,000.
  • Moderate damage (dents across the hood, roof, and several panels): roughly $3,000 to $7,000. This is where most insurance claims land after a serious storm.
  • Severe damage (hundreds of dents, large or creased dents, glass or trim damage): $7,000 to $15,000 and up.

The spread is real: a bad storm can put a $2,000 car and an $8,000 car on the same block, a 4:1 difference from the same clouds. Never assume your neighbour's estimate is your estimate.

These are repair values, not what you write a cheque for. Which brings us to the part that matters most.

What you actually pay

Hail is covered under the comprehensive portion of your auto policy, because a storm is not your fault. If you claim, the math is simple: you pay your deductible once per claim, and your insurer covers the approved repair cost above it. A $6,000 repair with a $500 deductible costs you $500, whether the storm hit one panel or six.

Two honest notes. First, your deductible is part of your contract with your insurer; be wary of anyone promising you can skip it entirely. Second, how a comprehensive claim touches your renewal depends on your policy, so it is worth a five-minute call to your broker. We wrote up the whole process in how hail insurance claims work in Alberta.

When hail totals a car

If the repair cost climbs close to the vehicle's actual cash value, the insurer may write it off instead of repairing it. That math hits older vehicles hardest: $9,000 of dents on a $10,000 car is a write-off conversation, while the same damage on a $45,000 truck is just a repair.

A thorough damage map protects you in both directions. It makes sure a repairable car gets a complete estimate, and it makes sure a write-off offer reflects everything the storm actually did.

Quick answers

What does hail repair cost with insurance?
When you claim, you pay your deductible once and your insurer covers the approved repair above it. A $6,000 repair with a $500 deductible costs you $500, whether the storm hit one panel or six.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. The 3-minute estimate is free and there is no obligation. You get a real repair range before you talk to your insurer or anyone else.
What makes hail repair more expensive?
Dent count first, then dent size and depth, which panels were hit, and whether the paint is cracked. Cracked paint pushes a panel toward conventional repair, which adds cost.
Can hail total my car?
It can. If the repair cost climbs close to the vehicle's actual cash value, the insurer may write it off instead of repairing it. That hits older, lower-value vehicles hardest.
